The players on one side of the court serve at the same time. If everyone serves well, the group scores a point and the players on the other side serve. If someone makes a mistake, everyone crosses the court and the group starts with zero points again. The goal of the drill is to score (for example) ten points by serving ten times in a row without any errors.

Individual defence till failure

Coach C initiates the drill by tossing a ball to spiker SP1 or SP2. This player digs the ball towards setter S. S sets to one of the spikers. This spiker spikes to defence player D1 or D2. One of the defence players digs the spike, the other player underarm passes the ball over the net to the spikers.

Serving towards targets

The players have to serve towards targets 1 to 4, in that order. If their serve touches a target, they can move to the next. After one complete round, they score a point.

Each time their serves miss the target, they have to move to the other side of the court and are only allowed back after they have successfully served towards one of the bigger targets. On this side of the court, they must perform jump serves. They can continue where they left off when they move to the other side again.

One against one - king of the court

The player on side B serves towards side A. Only underhand serves are allowed. Each player may touch the ball at most two times before it has to cross the net. The players are not allowed to jump and the ball has to be played over the net with a hard touch.

Serving towards an opening

The team of five plays a set to five point against the team of three. The team of three always serves. If the team of five wins, new teams are formed. If the team of three wins, the teams stay as they are.

Serves dictated by opponent

The players at the net are responsible for blocking and setting. The players in the back row serve, receive, spike, and defend. This drill has two variants:

  • The player at the net on the opposing side decides how the server should toss the ball: with his left hand, with his right hand, or with both hands.

Serving assignments

Team A plays a game to five points against team B. Each team has to stick to the following assignments when serving:

  • The first serve of each team has to be short.
  • The following two or three serves, depending on the number of players, have to be targeted to each of the receiving players.

Targeted serving with a cone, chair, or ball

SV1 and SV2 take turns serving towards R. R receives the serve with one foot on a cone (or a chair or ball) and passes the ball to setter S. S sets the ball back to R, who spikes the ball across the net, again with one foot on the cone. If R is able to receive the serve and spike across the net without taking his foot from the cone, the players change positions. If not, they try again.

All rotations

Team A receives serve in all six rotations. Only team B serves. Both teams move to the next rotation when team A has scored twice in a row. Once team A has received services in all six rotations, new teams are formed.
